The Garden which is the nearest to God – by Taturo Atzu

In 2017, the art project ‘The garden which is the nearest to God’ by Taturo Atzu was located on top of ‘de Oude Kerk’ (Old Church) in Amsterdam. ‘De Oude Kerk’ is known as ‘ the living room of the city of Amsterdam’ where people come together. Taturo Atzu got inspired by this idea and integrated this into this project.

Taturo Atzu gave the rooftop of the church an update by re-imagining it into a fully furnished, modern living room. The décor features, such as a table, chairs, and sofa, included a classical print from the church collection. The Japanese artist brings the spectators closer to experiencing wonder as they make their metaphoric journey by climbing the 156 steps onto a high 300 m² open space above with a fictional living room and a built-in seating area around the clock tower of the church.
